The Abba story began when Bjorn Ulvaeus met Benny Andersson. The pair wrote their first song together. Then in 1969 Bjorn and Benny met Agnetha Faltsklog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The Abba acronym was their first names Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid.
Abba won a song contest at Eurovision in 1974 for their song Waterloo. Later that song reached Number one on the charts. Then Mamma Mia took the Number one spot which Abba enjoyed nine times between 1974 and 1980. In 1976 Abba was one of the most popular groups in the world. Bjorn and Agnetha married in 1978 but also later divorced in 1981.
In 1977 Dancing Queen became Abba's US number one. In 1982 Abba decided to take a break. The groups music lives on and in 1990 there was the begining of a major revival with movies using Abba songs. In 1999 a sucessful musical premiered in London called Mamma Mia and then opened on Broadway two years later. A movie called Mamma Mia opened in July 2008 with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosan. In June 2009 an Abba Museum opened in Stockhom.
